Inherent Good vs. Evil

This year marks my sixth year(6년차) as an ethics teacher.

Among various teaching methods, I particularly enjoy using "paired debates."

A common topic in my ethics classes is: "Is human nature inherently(본능적으로, 본성, 선천적으로) good or evil?"

One lesson stands out in my memory.

cf) One of my teachers from high school stands out in my memory★.

Since the class had an odd number of students, I paired up with one of the students for the debate.

Regarding human nature, I said, "I used to believe that humans are inherently good. But after becoming a teacher, I've come to realize that the theory of inherently evil is more accurate."

I said it lightheartedly as a joke, but the student looked a bit taken aback(좀 당황하다)★.

After that, whenever I scolded kids making trouble in the hallway, the student who had debated with me looked at me sympathetically(측은하게) and said, "You must have a tough job."

Seeing this reaction made me recognize that there is still a lot of warmth in the world.

STUDY GROUP QUESTIONS

1. Share some tips for debating effectively and productively.

<My Answer>

I enjoy debating with my friends about the economy or today's news.
When I meet up with my friends and drink coffee together, one of them starts talking about a topic.
That's why we enjoy debating is because we have similar thoughts.
Some people don't like that. If you want to debate effectively, you need to gather some people who like having a debate.

<GPT Answer>

I enjoy debating with my friends about the economy or current news.
When we meet up and drink coffee together, one of us usually brings up a topic.
We enjoy debating because we have similar interests.
Some people don't like debating, though. To have a productive debate, it's important to gather people who actually enjoy it.

2. How can debates and discussions improve one's understanding of a topic or problem?

<My Answer>

I need to study and search in detail about the debate topic first and deeply think about the pros and cons of the topic.
And I have to organize my thoughts logically.
Sometimes I talk about the topic with my parents or friends.
I hear their thoughts and ask about some problems.

<GPT Answer>

First, I need to study and research the topic in detail, and think deeply about the pros and cons.
Then, I try to organize my thoughts logically.
Sometimes, I talk about the topic with my parents or friends.
I listen to their opinions and ask questions about things I find confusing.

3. How can parents and teachers help children to develop good moral values?

<My Answer>

My parents have always raised me freely. Although I didn't have an interest in studying, they always cheered me everything without scolding.
So, I could have high self-esteem, and I learned to give from my parents. Then, I could develop good moral values.

<GPT Answer>

My parents always raised me freely. Even though I wasn't interested in studying, they supported me without scolding.
Thanks to that, I was able to build high self-esteem, and I learned to be generous from them.
That’s how I was able to develop good moral values.
