Inherent Good vs. Evil
This year marks my sixth year(6년차) as an ethics teacher.
Among various teaching methods, I particularly enjoy using "paired debates."
A common topic in my ethics classes is: "Is human nature inherently(본능적으로, 본성, 선천적으로) good or evil?"
One lesson stands out in my memory.
cf) One of my teachers from high school stands out in my memory★.
Since the class had an odd number of students, I paired up with one of the students for the debate.
Regarding human nature, I said, "I used to believe that humans are inherently good. But after becoming a teacher, I've come to realize that the theory of inherently evil is more accurate."
I said it lightheartedly as a joke, but the student looked a bit taken aback(좀 당황하다)★.
After that, whenever I scolded kids making trouble in the hallway, the student who had debated with me looked at me sympathetically(측은하게) and said, "You must have a tough job."
Seeing this reaction made me recognize that there is still a lot of warmth in the world.
